County Mayo is known more for its stunning natural beauty than for its nightlife or other urban pleasures. With a relatively sparse population and no town with more than 20,000 residents, visitors can expect a great deal of sightseeing and as much seclusion as they desire. Touring Mayo offers the most adventurous travellers access to the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic coast as well as the famous chapel at the top of Croagh Patrick Mountain.
The region's pilgrimage sites are well-known throughout the country. Knock Shrine receives the most consistent stream of devotees due to an apparition of the Virgin Mary, the Lamb of God and a pair of saints that appeared to worshippers in the 19th century. St Patrick also spent time here, and his legacy is best explored from the small town of Westport.
The area's popularity with tourists has given rise to several top-notch countryside hotels and luxury resorts. Mount Falcon Country House Hotel & Spa Mayo lies between Foxford and Ballina and is surrounded by woodlands on the banks of the River Moy. Other solid options include Lynch's Breaffy House Hotel and Breaffy Woods Hotel, the pair of which is located just a few kilometres east of Castlebar on N60. Hotel Westport in the town of the same name is family-friendly, and it's joined by the Ocean Spirit Spa. Two other options include the 19th-century Mulranny Park Hotel in Westport, with views of Croagh Patrick and the Atlantic Ocean, and The Lisloughrey Lodge, planted between Lough Mask and Lough Corrib.
County Mayo is bordered by Galway to the south, Sligo to the north and Roscommon to the east. Ireland West Airport Knock is located in the central part of the county and is within an hour's drive of the towns Ballina, Castlebar and Westport.
