Things To Do in Athlone

While visiting Athlone and County Westmeath you’re sure to find a host of great activities to keep you and your travelling party entertained. Due to the vast amount of waterways, water based activities are a huge attraction in the area. These include sailing, river cruises, water skiing, wakeboarding, and the ever popular fishing. For those who prefer to stay dry can find plenty of on land activities. The surrounding countryside is perfect for scenic hill walks, cycling, horseback riding, and golf.

For the more passive traveller we recommend taking time to explore the town where they will find historic sites such as Athlone Castle Visitor’s Centre and the Church of Saints Peter & Paul. Various galleries and theatres, as discussed in the culture section, can also be found in the town centre. When you’re in town don’t forget to visit the oldest pub in Ireland, Seans Bar.

If you are visiting Athlone with your family, don't think that we haven't plenty of events for the little kiddies too! If you visit the Athlone Regional Sports Centre your kids can get some energy out before going to sure thing little kiddy adventure at the Glendeer Pet Farm. There is also the Athlone Leisure World as well as the Krazy Kids Fun Factory! Plenty of these places have activities for children under the age of twelve. This may include bowling or AstroTurf football. Of course, don't forget that the water activities are also very good for children too.

The historical importance of Athlone should not be underestimated. The town was founded during the 12th Century when a bridge was built over the River Shannon

Facilities
