Vienna, the symbolic crossroads between the east and west of the Europe, is one of the greatest and most admired cities on the continent. With the relaxed, old-world feel of the east, yet also the modern facilities and conveniences of the west, wandering the streets, admiring the stately buildings and classical architecture, stopping for the occasional coffee and cake, could keep you busy for days. Some of the most renowned of Europe's museums and galleries can be found in Vienna, and the city has been home to many of western Europe's greatest historical figures, so there's no shortage of heritage and culture. Then there are walks in the Viennese woods, and maybe a visit to the funfair with its giant Ferris Wheel, made famous in the film The Third Man. The centre of the city is small enough to be explored on foot, but a hire car helps to make the most of the surrounding attractions.
Theatre, opera and classical music – With such notable luminaries as Beethoven, Brahms, Mahler, Mozart, Schubert and Strauss spending much of their lives and careers in Vienna, the city's reputation for music and theatre can't be ignored. The Burgtheater, the Akademietheater, the Volkstheater Wien and the Theater in der Josefstadt are considered among the best in the world, while the Wiener Musikverein – home to the Vienna Philharmonic orchestra – the Staatsoper and the Volksoper offer the very best in concerts and opera.
Museums – Located throughout Vienna are numerous museums exhibiting much that gives the city its classical reputation, such as the Albertina, the Military History Museum, the Sigmund Freud Museum, and the Mozarthaus Vienna. The highest concentration can be found in the Museumsquatier, and include the Leopold Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the AzW museum of architecture.
Palaces – The former imperial summer residence, Schönbrunn Palace, and the official residence and work place of Austria's President, Hofburg Palace, have nearly a thousand years of history between them. Hofburg is home to several museums and the Spanische Hofreitschule, where the Lippizzaner horses can be found. Schönbrunn has some fantastic gardens, which also house Tiergarten Schönbrunn – the world's oldest zoo, with its giant pandas – the Gloriette, many ancient sculptures, and the Roman Ruins.
