Nice, a large city on the French Riviera, has a universal appeal for travellers both young and old. Famous for the beautiful view on the Promenade des Anglais, its famous waterfront, and is an ethnically diverse port city. The year round sunshine and plentiful activities draw all sorts of travellers, from backpackers to romance-seeking couples and families.
Nice’s old town, Vieux Nice, will bring visitors back in time as the area has scarcely changed since the 1700’s. Tourists can meander through the maze of streets and alleys to find picturesque houses, boutiques and delis. The famous daily market, Cour’s Saleya, can be found in the old town area. Visitors will find a hub of activity as the market is chock full of magnificent carts selling flowers, local produce and fresh fish. Architecture and history buffs should visit the baroque Palais Lascaris, a 17th-century mansion housing a frescoed orgy of Flemish tapestries, faience (tin-glazed earthenware) and gloomy religious paintings.
Another must see in Nice is the Promenade Des Anglais, named so as it was paid for by Nice’s English colony in 1822. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll down the promenade while they gaze over the magnificent waterfront. The ideal time to visit here is sunset as it is recognised as one of the most majestic views in the region. On the promenade tourists can find several museums and art galleries which house some amazing collections dating far back into French history.
Whatever mood you find yourself in come the evening hours, you can find a place to suit it. Whether you want to sip on a glass of wine on a terrace in civilised fashion, or enter a busy Irish bar to party into the night, you’ll find your needs catered for. For youthful nightclub enthusiasts, you can enjoy a great night in the High Club whose mega sound system attracts large crowds and the occasional big name DJ.
Food lovers will be ecstatic upon sampling the many fantastic restaurants in Nice. In recent years the food scene has been revamped as many establishments have redeveloped into modern chic bistros. The chefs are young and energetic, producing food in their own creative style.
The beaches in Nice are home to some of the best views around but visitors should take into account that they do not cater for comfort. The beaches are covered in pebbles and large flat stones, bare feet are not recommended. There are private beaches that have imported sand to create golden strands where a comfy mattress can be rented for €15 to €20. Visitors to both public and private beaches can partake in the many activities on offer, from beach volleyball to jet skis and pedalos. The surrounding towns have far nicer beaches that offer golden sand and these can be reached by a short drive. The hills overshadowing the city are a must see for those seeking the perfect view. Many walking trails can be found throughout the hills which offer breath-taking views overlooking the city and the Côte D’Azur.
Shoppers can find a variety of shops throughout the city. The main shopping street in Nice is Avenue Jean Medecin which runs the north-south length of the modern city centre. Here shoppers can expect to find everything from well-known shopping departments to small independent stores offering cheap clothing wear. In the Old City you can find small boutiques for more up market purchases from high fashion to local craftwork. Jewellery shops are mainly based on the Avenue de Verdun.
