Alghero-Fertilia Airport, officially known as Alghero - Riviera del Corallo Airport, is located five miles north west of the city of Alghero, in northern Sardinia. Along with Olbia and Cagliari, it's one of three main airports serving the island and the smallest by passengers travelling. The airport hosts around 1.5 million people per year, with domestic flights travelling regularly to Milan, Bologna, Bergamo, Pisa and Rome, as well as international flights to London, Eindhoven, Madrid and Bratislava. There are seasonal departures to other destinations in Italy like Turin and Verona, and further locations such as Copenhagen, Dublin, Helsinki, Manchester, Bucharest and Budapest. The airport is accessed by the SS 42 and SS 291, which is very close to the E25 and allows links to the rest of the Island.
The City of Alghero - With a population of around 45,000, recognising both Italian and Catalan as its official languages, Alghero can claim uniqueness amongst all the cities of Italy. Lying next to the Mediterranean, the town offers plenty for those looking for sun and sand in their vacation, but there is far more to Alghero besides. The location has been settled since 4000 BC, with about 100 remains of Nuraghe settlements being a popular attraction, all dating from 1500 BC. There is much in the way of classical architecture to be found also, with structures like Alghero Cathedral, the Church of St Francis, the Madonna del Santo Rosario, the Torre del Portal, and the Palazzo D'Albis all dating from between the 14th and the 15th centuries. The beautiful caves known as Neptune's Grotto, filled with massive stalactites, can be visited just outside the town.
The Island of Sardinia - This stunning island has been a vacation retreat as far back as Roman times, and with a hire car there is no need to limit yourself to one particular part of it. The Maddalena Archipelago offers stunning scenery and fantastic scuba-diving. Cagliari, besides being near to some of the most important and impressive megalithic constructions in the world, boasts several colonies of flamingos in its nearby lagoon and is home to the year-round Festival of Saint'Efisio. La Pelosa Beach, in addition to its beautiful sands and sparkling sea, has an excellent example of a 16th century Argonese sighting tower, one of the oldest in Europe. And these are just a few random selections of the delights to be found in Sardinia.
