Clonmel is County Tipperary’s largest town. It is in the Suir river valley and within sight of the Comeragh Mountains. Inside the town, the Main Guard is a fine building from the seventeenth century. It is currently used for cultural events and exhibitions.
On the western outskirts you will find the pilgrimage site of St. Patrick’s Well. There is a roofless chapel alongside a pool where pilgrims once bathed. The pool has a stone cross in the centre. These days it is not used for anything more than paddling. It is a tranquil spot with woodland and the sound of running water. The water feeds into Marfield Lake which is now a conservation area for wild fowl.
Carey’s Castle is a great place to walk. Park your Europcar car or van in the car park nearby and take the path through the woods and explore the ruins. There are sometimes deer in the forest.
The Rock of Cashel is a limestone outcrop topped with mediaeval monuments which include Cormac’s Chapel, a tower, a cathedral and a castle. It is a very popular spot for excursions.
Fethard, a short drive away, is Ireland’s most complete mediaeval town. Most of its thirteenth century wall still stands as does the church of that period and town houses from a couple of centuries later.
The Comeragh Mountains are loved by walkers and climbers. You can drive to the trailhead for a circular walk that takes in views such as the Mahon Falls and sheep and goats grazing on the moorland.
