Here at Europcar we are delighted to have been involved in this feel good story. The Ray D’Arcy Show on National Radio contacted us and told us of the Workman family’s endeavour to get 94 year old Tommy to the F.A Cup final to watch his beloved Aston Villa go head to head with Arsenal.
Tommy, originally from Birmingham, attended the 1957 F.A Cup final in which his lifelong team Aston Villa triumphed over Manchester United. It was this memory that sparked an idea within his three grandchildren to get Tommy across the water in what could be his last chance to see Villa in a major final.
They launched a social media campaign which gained support and eventually resulted in them receiving a match day ticket from the Aston Villa Irish Lions Supporters Club and a free ferry ride from Irish Ferries. They reached out to a number of car rental companies who informed them they couldn’t bring a vehicle from Ireland into the U.K, this is where we stepped in. We made an exception to our usual terms and conditions and provided a suitable seven-seater allowing them to take it on the ferry and onwards to Wembley free of charge.
Unfortunately it was Arsenal who won out the day but Tommy enjoyed what was a magnificent trip and got the chance to meet up with family still in England including 9 great grandchildren. We’d like to commend Geraldine and her siblings in their outstanding efforts to get Tommy to the final and wish him all the best in the future.
