The Republic of Fiji sits happily in the South Pacific and is made up from more than 332 islands and over 500 inlets. A mere 106 of these islands are inhabited, and the two main ones are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Viti Levu is home to the capital city of Suva the major vacation destination of Nadi and the highest point in the country, Mount Tomanivi. The island nation of Fiji is synonymous with coral reefs, year round sunshine, soft white sands and clear blue waters. Famous island groups like Yasawa and Mamanuca, featured in the 1980 movie The Blue Lagoon and the 2000 Tom Hanks movie Castaway, provide the paradise-like sand and sea getaways that sun worshippers adore. However, there are ample opportunities to stretch the legs and climb a mountain, visit an orchid garden, raft down a river, soak in a hot spring or visit a traditional village.
The City of Suva – Fiji's capital city is home to more than half the entire country's population and is an eclectic mix of south pacific natives, antipodean ex-pats and visiting Asian sailors. Perched on a peninsula between Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour, the city features Suva City Library, built in 1909, Government House, the University of the South Pacific and the Fiji Museum. Victoria Parade and Cumming Street provide lively and colourful shopping areas.
The Mamanuca Islands – A volcanic archipelago of about twenty islands and one of the most popular Fiji vacation destinations, featuring beautiful island resorts and fantastically white sandy beaches. Several Mamanuca Islands are uninhabited, usually because there is no natural source of water, and the most famous uninhabited island in the group is tiny Monuriki, which was the main location for the 2000 film Cast Away, that starred Tom Hanks.
The City of Nadi – One of the country's largest towns, and most visitors’ first introduction to Fiji, Nadi is a multicultural city of over 30,000 people. Nadi Beach is a beautiful strand, perfect for soaking up the sun or watching it set. Natadola Beach is Fiji’s most spectacular, and is popular among swimmers and body surfers. Nadi also includes Sri Siva Subramaniya, a huge Hindu temple, the Sleeping Giant and Waqadra Botanical Gardens.
