Tenerife South Airport - or Tenerife South-Reina Sofial Airport, to give its official name – is one of two international airports serving Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. It's found just outside the municipality of Arona, about 35 miles south of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital. A busy airport, handling over nine million passengers a year and hosting flights from all over Europe, including most destinations in Germany, France, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria and Spain, as well as the UK, and further afield like Moscow, St Petersburgh, most airports in Scandinavia, plus Poland and the Czech Republic. The celebrity of Tenerif as a holiday destination, particularly the south side of the island, guarantees that this airport will continue to be an active and popular destination for years to come.
The Island of Tenerife - Tenerife is the largest and most populated of all seven Canary Islands, as well as being Spain's most populous island. 900,000 people share the 785 sq mi land mass with more than ten million visitors every year, joining the island through one of the two main international airports. Southern Tenerife is the more popular holiday destination, as it enjoys a hotter and dryer climate, and consequently there are many well developed resorts down there, such as Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, occupying the area known as the Costa Adeje. In the north of the island a greener, lusher landscape prevails, and towns like Puerto de la Cruz have managed to adapt to accommodate visiting holidaymakers, yet still retain some of their old-harbour town charm, managing to be cosy and cosmopolitan at the same time, thereby becoming popular with more mature visitors.
The Beaches - A main attraction of Tenerife, though, still has to be the beaches. The wonderful climate, including 3000 hours of sunshine annually, mean that sun, sand and sea can be enjoyed at nearly any time of year. The golden sands of Playa de la Tejita, boasting every facility and a beautiful promenade, is considered one of the 'must-see' beaches, while Las Teresitas is the ideal spot to take a family for some sand-covered fun. For those looking to get away from the crowds, the stunning and unspoilt black sands of Playa de Benijo or Playa Los Patos offer some of the quietest spots to relax and unwind.
