Since 2000, Armenia has been building a reputation as an extremely popular vacation destination, and now entertains nearly one million visitors per year. The country is known as one huge archaeological site, with relics and artefacts all over that date from the dawn of time. Monuments from the Stone Ages and settlements from the time of Assyria and Babylon, Macedonia and the Roman empire cover the land, and Armenia was in fact the first country to adopt Christianity as its national religion, years before Constantine. The world's largest mountain lake, Lake Sevan is extremely popular in the summer and the Tsakhkadzor ski resort is busy in the winter. Mount Ararat sits just across the Turkish border, and has an extremely strong connection to Armenian tradition as the landing site of Noah's Ark, after the Great Flood. Less than 10% of the countryside is under 3000 feet in altitude, and as such it's marked by volcanic peaks, clear mountain lakes, hot and cold natural springs, caves, waterfalls and other geological wonders. The towns and cities are known to be lively and colourful, with great places to eat, exciting markets and new hotels being built everyday. Hiring a car and touring Armenia will doubtless reward with an unpredictable, yet unforgettable holiday experience.

The City of Yerevan - Armenia's capital city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the world, dating back to the building of the Erebuni Fortress on the Hrazdan River in 782 BC. Set in the very heart of the country, Yerevan makes an ideal base to explore the rest of Armenia. Just be sure to devote enough time to experiencing the city itself, its people and culture. Among the 19th century Russian architecture are countless museums and galleries, not least of which are the State Museum of Armenian History, the Tsitsernakaberd and the Erebuni Fortress Museum. Other visitor attractions include the Republic Square dancing fountains, the State Opera House, the Cascade complex and the historical site of Karmir Blur. And in addition to Yerevan Water World, Yerevan Zoo, Yerevan Circus and some dozen gardens and public parks, the city also offers an exciting nightlife that includes various clubs, bars, jazz cafes, restaurants and casinos. However, it's Yerevan's proximity to the legendary Mount Ararat that brings in the most visitors, as they can look up to the site of Noah's landing from the city's place at the mountain's feet.
