With a stunning coastline, unspoilt nature – including eight national parks – and amazingly well-preserved, centuries-old harbour towns, Croatia offers a similar climate to Greece or Spain, but with more culture and far less commercialism. The north-west region of the country, including Pula, Porec and Rvinj, has close ties with its nearby Italian neighbour, Venice. Further south is the wild, rugged region of Dalmatia, including the towns of Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik, with its coastal islands nestling in the warm Mediterranean and the Dinaric Alps reaching inland from the sparkling shores. But, where ever you choose, you'll be surrounded by lush green Mediterranean vineyards, hills and woodlands or charming architecture and walled seaside towns. Croatia is the latest member of the EU after the difficult times that led to the breakup of the former Yugoslavia but, in the new millennium, it's put itself firmly back on the map as one of Europe's premier vacation destinations.

The City of Zagreb – Zagreb is the capital and largest city in Croatia, with a population of around 800,000 in the city itself, with far more in the surrounding county. The history of Zagreb dates back to first century AD, as the Roman town of Andautonia, and was first mentioned as Zagreb in 1094. Packed with history, art and culture from both Croatia and Europe, Zagrab boasts around thirty collections in various museums and galleries, made up from over 3.6 million individual exhibits. Among the museums are the Ethnographic Museum, the Arts and Crafts Museum, the Mimara Museum, the Modern Gallery, and the Museum of the City of Zagreb. Many visitors skip Zagreb in favour of more Renaissance cities like Dubrovnik, or the Adriatic coastline, which is a shame because they miss out on fabulous shopping, terrific gastronomy and some marvelous sights.

The Adriatic Coast – With popular islands like Hvar, Korcula and Pag, the Dalmation coast offers everything you could wish from a beach holiday, and more besides. There's sun, sand, sea and all the seafood you could want, but all set in architecturally beautful fishing towns, backed by looming mountains covered in vineyards. The major cities of Zadar, Split and Dubrovnik all offer excellent bases for your beach adventures, while still providing a metropolitan nightlife and conveniences.
