The Republic of Latvia is found just south of Estonia, and north of Lithuania, on the Baltic Sea. Aside from over 300 miles of sandy coastline, more than 50% of the country is covered with thick, natural forests, which means that the Latvian people involve nature as a major part of their national culture. Latvian runes - or folk songs –-are preserved under UNESCO's Global Oral Heritage and the land is dotted with ancient, magical and sacred sites such as Pokainu forest, Latvia's equivalent of Stonehenge where it's said the spiritual glow can be seen from space, and Zilais Kalns - the Blue Mountain - a blue-misted mountain top near Valmiera. It is also said that the Holy Grail, along with other treasures of the Knight's Templar, are hidden somewhere in Latvia. The City of Riga - Latvia's capital city is the largest urban settlement in the Baltic region and an incredible mixture of ancient Latvian traditions and the various cultures that have had influence over the country across the centuries. Since the country gained its recent independence, Riga has been undergoing a serious image polishing. The crumbling storefronts of the Soviet era have been restored to their former, art nouveau glory, trendy cafes and hip restaurants are replacing old-fashioned eateries, and the museums, art collections and shopping experiences have all contributed to Rīga being named 2014 European Capital of Culture. With more than 800 years worth of gothic architecture covering the churches and buildings in Old Town, Riga is famous for its remarkable structures and design, while its lakes, water features and parks mean a relaxing stroll or spa treatment is never far away. The city's most popular sights and attractions include: Riga Cathedral, dating from 1211; Riga Central Market, where the local traders gather in a vast space to unload their wares; Riga Art Museum Bourse, the city's former stock exchange remodelled to showcase the national art collection; the 14th century Riga Castle; the 800 year old St Peter's Church; and the stunning, snaking Pilsetas kanals, once the town's defensive moat, now converted into a beautiful waterway.
