An overseas region of France, with Paris as its capital city and the Euro as its currency, Martinique is a mountainous island living under the shadow of Mont Pelée, a still active volcano that destroyed the land's former capital of St-Pierre in 1902. The northern part of the island is filled with spectacular peaks and rainforests while in the south you find natural bays and beautiful beaches, but each part offers visitors something different while both retain their rich Franco-Caribbean culture and identity. Local culture and cuisine combine both influences in the townships' traditional craft shops, bars and restaurants, while popular sights include La Pagerie, birthplace of Napoleon's Empress Josephine, Rocher du Diamant, a 600-foot pinnacle just a mile offshore, and the Plage du Diamant, or Diamond Beach, a beautiful, white sand-covered stretch that's ideal for sunbathing.

The City of Fort de France – The effective capital city of Martinique, and the political and trading centre, is a pleasant place to shop or find a restaurant but excels when it comes colonial architecture and historic sites. In the town are the Bibliothèque Schoelcher, built in 1889 and transported brick by brick from Paris; the neoclassical courthouse, the Palais de Justice, built in 1906; Fort St Louis, dating from 1640; and the 1895 Cathédrale St Louis, to name only a few.

Pointe du Bout - At the southern end of the Bay of Fort-de-France is Pointe du Bout, Martinique’s most developed resort. Home to the island’s busiest yachting marina and some of its best seaside facilities, though they are actually small by normal Caribbean standards. At the tip is a peninsula that features hotels fringing the coast and the marina in the middle. The concrete remains of the derelict and disused Hotel Kalenda gives the area an unfortunate air of decay, but there are still some very pleasant beaches here.

The Village of Grande Anse – This charming little village is set along a beach front road lined with brightly painted boats and a string of pleasant restaurants. The main street is for pedestrians only, allowing for a far more enjoyable to stroll along the beach.
