Navan is the gateway to the Boyne River Valley drive, a 250km route that encompasses 9000 years of history and heritage. The Boyne Valley Drive visits some of the most intriguing attractions around Navan. Included in these are the Hill of Tara, Trim Castle, Kells High Cross, Mellifont Abbey, Monasterboice, and Newgrange.
Newgrange is a passage tomb built more than 5,200 years ago. Located just north of the picturesque River Boyne, the tomb is a large circular mound with a stone passageway. Even more incredible is the fact that at dawn on the Winter Solstice, an opening above the entrance allows a shaft of sunlight light up the entire passageway, marking the start of the New Year to the Neolithic people.
Trim Castle is the largest Norman castle in Ireland and was built over a 30 year period beginning in the year 1176. The castle has 20 sides and is built in the shape of a cruciform and is protected by a ditch, curtain wall, and moat. The keep is three stories tall, and access to the castle is via a guided tour.
The Hill of Tara is located close to Navan Town and is an archaeological complex that contains a number of ancient monuments. According to tradition, the Hill of Tara was the seat of the High King of Ireland. In total, 142 kings were coronated, Tara. Although the hill itself is not particularly high, on a clear day from the summit, you can see half the counties of Ireland.
