In Iraq there are three Europcar locations at present, all in the city of Erbil in the Kurdish region of the country, and all are ready to deliver our first class car hire services. Useful options such as express pick-up and easy online booking, and extras like child seats, satellite navigation and additional driver cover are available. In addition, Europcar's huge fleet of comfortable and reliable vehicles is always nearby, with a car to suit any budget or requirement, along with the convenience of daily, weekly, monthly, long and short term hire, as well as the experience and expertise that comes with being one of the world's leading car hire firms.

While the instability of its recent bloody history has made the majority of Iraq too dangerous for independent travellers, the situation is far better in the semi-autonomous Kurdish regions in the north and east. After decades of oppression and persecution, the semi-autonomous enclave and its five million inhabitants have witnessed an unprecedented economic boom, and a welcome return to comparatively stable times. While the rest of Iraq remains caught in a cycle of violence, most of the Kurdish region is insulated enough for visitors to enjoy safe travels, and is being positively marketed as an off the beaten track visitor destination. Surrounded by imposing mountains, dotted with lakes and home to numerous archaeological sites, this small region is an enchanting place to visit. The future of the region may be far from certain, but the warm and hospitable people you'll meet here, along with the pride they have in a homeland they were denied for so long, are bond to inspire you nonetheless. Landlocked and largely untouched by mainstream tourism, with the opening of Erbil International Airport in 2005, the Kurdistan region of Iraq is happily opening its doors.

The City of Erbil -

The capital of Kurdish Iraq is claimed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the history of the world. Amongst many interesting points in the city's past, the Battle of Gaugamela took place about sixty miles to the west, where Alexander the Great defeated Darius III of Persia. Erbil is still a destination uncorrupted by hordes of western visitors and features the Citadel of Arbil, at the centre of the city, which is a 1,100,000 square foot site where excavating has discovered evidence of its occupation from as early as 5000 BC, while historical sources mention it as far back as 2000 BC. Also of interest are the busy Qaysari Bazaars, the Mound of Qalich Agha, found within in the grounds of the Erbil Museum of Civilisation, Sami Rahman Park, the 12th century Mudhafaria Minaret, and the Kurdish Textile Museum. And one of the most obvious attractions of the City of Erbil that should never be forgotten, its people. Always friendly and welcoming to visitors, offering a culture and cuisine that mixes the best of Turkish and Arabic flavours with exotic spices and plenty of rich fruits.
